The fat we carry around our waists is different to the fat we store everywhere else because it can increase our risk of developing diabetes or heart disease. If you do regular exercise you will start building up muscles and muscle weighs more than fat.
By measuring your waist in the same place each week then you will get a better idea of how much fat you have lost or perhaps need to lose. According to the World Health Organisation the correct place to measure your waist is on your right hand side, find your bottom rib and the top of your hip bone.
The ideal waist circumference measurement for you will depend on your sex and ethnic background.
When you have found your bottom rib and top of your hip bone,
then measure the space between them and it is in the middle that you put the tape measure to measure around your waist. So for example if the space between your bottom rib and the top of your hip bone is 5cm then you would place the tape measure at the 2.5cm point. It can be easier to do if you get someone to help you and the measurement will be more accurate.
